Something most of us could only dream of – an unbelievable penthouse apartment in New York City which boasts a tubular slide that plummets through a magnificently designed four storeys.
These spectacular interiors have been created by one of my favourite designers – Ghislaine Vinas. Working in partnership with architect David Hotson, the apartment sits inside the uppermost storeys of a late nineteenth century tower based in Manhattan. As it had never been used previously on a residential basis, David Hotson was able to do his magic to create a fantastic space which presents a quadruple height living room, a glazed attic, indoor balconies and – my favourite – the unusual polished stainless steel slide which allows light to bounce off it in all directions.
The slide begins at the very top of the apartment – in the glazed attic room. Surrounded by glass, the slide has been slotted into a circular hole to allow residents to safely climb inside in preparation for their descent. It curves around a column and through a window, before breifly stopping on the next floor down to give the option of accessing these rooms or clambering back into the tube to spiral down through a further three floors.
Once you’ve made it down all four floors, you face a fun-house style mirror at the edge of the living room. Could this get any better? I loved visiting IKEA when I was younger as the childrens department was entered through a slide… looking back, this slide was probably only a maximum of five or six foot in length… I would have stopped wishing for a pony every birthday and prayed for a four-storey slide like so if I’d have known it was possible! The children who reside in this property are so so lucky - I'm so jealous! (I think that says something about my maturity levels...)
