As part of my degree studies, I was required to choose an interior designer discussed in the module text and produce both a presentation board and report based on their work.

As I follow Ghislaine Vinas on Facebook, I decided to message her to see if she would be willing to answer a couple of questions. I didn’t expect to receive a reply; after all, I’m sure Ghislaine is a very busy lady! However, I was thrilled to see that Ghislaine had taken time out to get back to me, thereby providing me with a much better insight into her work. Here’s what she had to say:

“I am inspired by seeing a space that could be transformed into something fantastic. Often I see things that I like because I see the potential in them… not the way it looks at the moment but rather after the metamorphosis. I am inspired by colour combinations that are different or exciting. I love happy things. I love light and bright spaces and sunlight spilling into a room.”

“(to be an interior designer) I think you have to have a good eye but you have to be flexible.Interior Design is a service and you are providing a service for your client… this means you need to make your client happy – not yourself. Design has a lot to do with convincing your clients that what you are dreaming up is going to be right for them. You have to be patient and be willing to design over and over again until you get it right.”

“I think I am practical – I don’t get hung up on an idea. I can move on easily if my client is not biting. I have a good aesthetic and I believe the spaces we create are happy, modern and clean. I don’t follow particular trends but I am affected by my surroundings and thus influenced by what I see. I am a good curator of styles and I understand proportion.”

“Colour is a connector – interiors are like compositions. I believe it is important to first create a good neutral background and then start plugging in the colour. Light is the oxygen of a space…Natural light is beautiful but not every space has it. Learning to control your light source is very important. Form again comes back to composition. Its good to work with form in either a repetitive sense or juxtaposing different forms in a space. Texture is all about creating depth – you have to use it wisely and sparingly in order for it to be effective. Too much texture can be overpowering but something textured against something shiny and flat can be very effective. Furniture are the organs of a space – you just cant do without them. Pick a good linear base – architectural looking furniture pieces – and then play with one or two pieces so that they create contrast. Objects are what give the space the true personality. It tells you about the inhabitant – they are secrets about the personal life of the inhabitor.”
