What an amazing concept! I’ve been waiting for this all my life; a comfortable bed which is fantastically constructed to allow snuggles & cuddles in bed without risking that oh-so-dreaded dead arm!
Thought up by Iranian designer Mehdi Motjabavi, the ingenious cuddle mattress comprises of a single foam block central portion for the body, and ten slats at the top and bottom of the mattress to allow for arms and feet to comfortably slot in. Each slat is three inches wide and part easily from one another to allow room for sliding an arm beneath your partner. Alternatively, if you manage to tear yourself away from the snuggling position, you can sleep face-down with your toes pointing into the mattress, snug between the slats. What’s not to love?
Motjabavi suggests that the cuddle mattress could improve and strengthen relationships through allowing partners to stay cuddled up all night long; as the body is supported by the slats on each side of the arm, it should not get squashed no matter how long it is left there! Dead arms need not be an issue anymore.
Motjabavi states that “embracing is a magical human behaviour, and one that distinguishes us from other animals. A loving embrace, especially between partners, is one of the most calming actions. Embracing, and bodily proximity and connection after love-making, are very important for strengthening relationships. However, what usually stops this pleasant state is not mental tiredness, it is physical weakness.”
Despite winning numerous awards since it was first made public in 2007, the mattress is still at the prototype stage and is yet to go into mainstream production.
The idea won a 2007 Red Dot Award and was a finalist in the 2008 Industrial Designers Society of America.
However, Motjabavi failed to raise that £48,000 required in start-up money through his crowd-sourced fundraising campaign, and so is currently seeking other investors before he can get this fantastic idea on the market.
I really hope that somebody does invest in this idea so that it can go into production; I think there’s definitely a market for such a fabulous product!
