AMY/21/HARTLEPOOL

Born in 1992, as of today I have lived my life across a total of twelve houses with six of those dreaded-to-most moves being undertaken over the past eighteen months during my time in the rental trap. I think it’s safe to say that my love for creating beautiful interiors has stemmed from way back in the past…

In June of this year, I was lucky enough to ‘fall into’ a new and exciting employment opportunity as a Trainee Architectural Technician within my father’s architectural and interior design practice. He has built the practice up over the past twenty years or so and truly is an inspiration to me - sometimes working eighteen hour days and averaging a grand total of around fifteen hours sleep over the duration of a week is all taken in his stride. I am employed under an apprenticeship scheme, during which I will obtain architectural qualifications through a combination of work-based learning and my attendance at college one day per week.

Following successfully completing the Diploma in Interior Design through The National Design Academy, I have now decided to embark upon the foundation degree in order to expand my knowledge further, with the hope that this will go hand in hand with the knowledge gained during my apprenticeship to give me the ability to deliver ‘the full package’ as an employee – dealing with client projects from start to end.

I thoroughly enjoyed studying the Diploma in Interior Design, and have no doubts that I will feel exactly the same about the foundation degree. My plans are to then progress onto the BA Hons qualification, before considering the MA. I’m very excited to be able to utilize the skills and knowledge gained during the diploma and improve them throughout my degree level work. I’m confident that I am going to succeed in the foundation degree, particularly due to the great support network I have and the vast amount of resources that are readily available to me in my day-to-day job.

As part of the degree, I am required to create a ‘Reflective Design Journal’. I have decided to create this blog as a way to reflect upon my journey throughout the degree. I did consider creating my journal using an A3 sketchbook, or even Photoshop, but decided a blog may be the better option for me in terms of continuous improvement due to the way in which others are able to freely pass comment on anything I post. I’m intending to use this blog to monitor my progression and further improve my skills and knowledge in order to attain the best possible grades within my work, although I’m hoping my ramblings may be able to help other’s who share my interest of all things interior too…
